Nunney bustles with a friendly community spirit that centres around its active village hall. There you’ll find regular live music, cinema club and food events, fitness, arts and children’s activities.
It has its own castle
Nunney Castle is in the heart of the village and creates an
impressive silhouette against the skyline. Built in a French style in 1373, the fascinating ruins even have a surrounding moat, which is home to a family of ducks who waddle round the streets. Christmas “Carols in the Castle” is an unmissable event. Nearby, The Church of all Saints, is steeped in centuries of history with its extraordinary stained-glass windows.
It’s an eventful place to live
The Nunney Street Fayre (normally held on the first Saturday in August) attracts over 10,000 visitors and is the highlight of the community calendar. Described by The Times as “one of the village fetes to be seen” it’s a fun day with food and craft stalls lining the streets. The Nunney International Horse Trials is another annual event, in the grounds of Grade II-listed Southfields House. Visitors watch top riders in action in an unspoilt farmland setting while trade stalls sell everything equine.
Deciding where to eat
Try Moat and Turret Café for morning coffee, serving a variety of homemade cakes, excellent coffee and light lunches – simply delicious! For a lunch-time snack, an evening supper or family gathering pop into The George Inn – a fabulous public house dating back to the mid 18th Century. And if you prefer a TV dinner, the village shop offers freshly baked bread and local produce that includes salads, quality meats, store-cupboard ingredients as well as the daily essentials.
On your doorstep…
Just a hop, skip and a jump away is the vibrant and buzzing town of Frome, with its rich scene of performing arts, markets and extensive calendar of events. With live music at The Cheese & Grain, renowned monthly Frome Independent Market, craft galleries and artist studio projects, this town exceeds all expectations on the ‘arts’ front. It is full of independent shops, two theatres, a cinema and holds an annual community festival. Definitely worth a visit!
