Wells

It’s where religious life meets café society

Historic buildings everywhere – some dating from medieval times (including the 13th century cathedral) provide a backdrop for up-to-date café culture, bars, restaurants, festivals and markets in Wells – yet the city has only around 12,000 residents

Top up your tote at weekly markets

All good places to live have regular markets, where you can buy direct from producers and makers and save on all that plastic packaging, plus keep the local economy thriving. Wells has markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with colourful food produce all for sale in the medieval market place near the cathedral.

Culture vultures have plenty to celebrate

For such a small city, there’s a large roster of events. Numerous festivals run throughout the year: Art, Film, Theatre, Food and Literature. Cedars Hall, state-of-the-art performance venue situated in the grounds of Wells Cathedral School hosts a full programme of concerts and events. There is even a carnival each November – said to be the largest illuminated procession in the world!

Shop local and lovely

The High Street has everything you need from specialist, independent retailers to major supermarkets in and around the city, including Waitrose. Check out Heritage Courtyard and the Artisan quarter for those interesting one-offs!

Something delicious for every day

Try Goodfellows for fresh fish straight from the coastal day boats. Enjoy dinner at the design-inspired Ensemble that overlooks the cathedral while The Bishop’s Table Café serves some of the best coffee in the city.

Beautiful landscapes are just a short drive (or cycle) away

Wells is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at the foot of the Mendip Hills, with the Somerset Levels stretching away to the south and west. Ideal for all sorts of outdoor activities from rambling to running and riding.
